Dirt Cheap 30 years on: the story of uranium mining in Australia’s Kakadu Nationalpark
Uranium mining was imposed on the Traditional Owners of Kakadu, the Mirarr people, in the late 1970s. The up to date highly controversial Ranger uranium mine commenced production in 1981.
Three decades later Kakadu uranium is still shipped out of Darwin to fuel nuclear reactors in Japan, Europe and elsewhere. Recently the Ranger uranium mine become of dubious fame as it was the origin of the uranium rods that fuelled the nuclear catastrophy in Japan’s Fukushima reactor.
Dirt Cheap 30 years on includes rare footage of Mirarr Senior Traditional Owner Toby Gangale stating clear opposition to mining on his country and documents his prescient concerns about uranium. It shows how the Australian Federal Government overrode the human rights of Kakadu’s Traditional Owners in order to impose a toxic industry in a World Heritage Area.
After the screening we have the pleasure to welcome the executive officer of the Mirarr’s organisation “Gundjeihmi Aboriginal Corporation” (GAC) Justin O’Brien from Jabiru. Justin lives close to the Ranger uranium mine. He is accompanied by Dave Sweeney, nuclear-free campaigner for the renowned Australian Conservtion Foundation who works together closely with GAC. Melanie Ball from the German Campaign “Atomausstieg Selber Machen” will tell us, how to stop the uranium industry in your own home – by simply changing your electricity provider. Moderation of the film talk will be held by Kerstin Schnatz, director and producer for STRAHLENDES KLIMA e.V.
Join us for the premiere of this reworked edition of the 1980 film in Berlin! Please also join us for socializing and further talks over free champagne and a light snack after the screening!
